DGNB ESG Manager

Ensure sustainable, ESG-compliant operation of existing buildings as a licensed expert

ESG Manager training from the DGNB will make you an expert in sustainable, ESG-compliant property management. You will gain the knowledge required to systematically optimise and safely manage existing buildings in accordance with the ESG framework. As well as providing you with extensive training on putting your knowledge to use, you also learn how to apply the ESG Verification for the EU Taxonomy and the DGNB System for Buildings In Use – which will help you plan systematically and implement measures as an optimisation tool.

This training is held in English. DGNB ESG Manager training is also offered in German. Set the website language to German to find out more.

Learning objectives and skills taught

  • You will learn how to implement the DGNB requirements for sustainable building operation and how to manage properties in accordance with the ESG framework.
  • You will learn how to carry out an ESG Verification for the EU Taxonomy as proof of the compliance of properties and submit your findings to the DGNB for assessment.
  • You will acquire an in-depth understanding of the basics of DGNB Certification for Buildings In Use, and will be officially recognised as a DGNB ESG Manager.

The DGNB ESG Manager title is awarded to experts in the management of sustainable building operation. *You can also participate in DGNB ESG Manager training without taking the examination. The fee is reduced accordingly (see fee overview).

Note on the examination: the online exam to qualify as a DGNB ESG Manager takes place approx. two or three weeks after participating in the training. We use multiple choice questions to test the contents of all seminar days. To pass, you must achieve at least 70 per cent in the exam.

Self-study preparation for the exam takes approx. 25 hours, depending on your personal learning style and previous knowledge.

On Seminar Day 1, we provide you with an overview of regulatory requirements at a European level, including the European Green Deal, the EU Taxonomy and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). The focus lies in the reporting practices and existing rating systems in different European countries. You will gain insights into ensuring compliance and safely managing potential risks. We will provide pointers on the shape of things to come and the potential offered by sustainable property management when you optimise and manage existing buildings in a systematic and ESG-compliant way.

Seminar Day 1:

  • The regulatory landscape in Europe and climate-related risks
  • Impacts on property valuations
  • The importance of the building sector
  • A European perspective on reporting and ratings
  • Getting to know the tools of the job and solutions for meeting regulatory requirements, achieving net-zero carbon emissions when operating buildings, risk mitigation and the documentation of compliance indicators
  • Sustainability strategies in the context of portfolios and individual buildings

On the remaining seminar days, we provide you with expert insights into the practical application of optimisation strategies when dealing with existing buildings. You will learn how to systematically monitor sustainability when buildings are in use and how to identify and implement appropriate measures. We will provide you with the necessary know-how and effective tools to manage all of these aspects yourself by drawing on climate action roadmaps or briefing your own energy consultants. Naturally, this all depends on your personal priorities. To lay a foundation for this, you will learn how to apply the DGNB System for Buildings In Use and make effective use of it yourself.

Seminar Day 2:

  • Technical requirements of the EU Taxonomy for Acquisition & Ownership, New Construction and Renovation

Seminar Day 3:

  • Using the DGNB framework and 12-step plan to optimise buildings towards becoming net-zero carbon
  • A practical example of carbon accounting (carbon footprint assessment exercise)
  • The DGNB System for Buildings In Use

Seminar Day 4:

  • Solutions to the carbon accounting exercise
  • Successful submission and certification of projects and the recertification process

  • Certificate of participation in DGNB ESG Manager training

Frequently asked questions about the DGNB ESG Manager (international version)

From start to finish, the DGNB ESG Manager training (international version) usually takes a maximum of two months. Participation and the subsequent examination take a maximum of 5 days.

Exam preparation is part of the training. You will also receive further preparation instructions from us approx. 10 days before the exam. You will be questioned on topics covered on all seminar days in the exam. Attending Seminar Day 1 is optional (you can decide whether to attend based on previous knowledge).

If you do not pass the DGNB ESG Manager examination the first time, you will be given a second chance free of charge. It is also possible to attempt to pass the exam a third time but we do charge 50% of the examination fee for this.

To use the DGNB ESG Manager title and logo and submit projects for DGNB Certification, we require you to sign a licensing agreement. The general licensing conditions can be found here.

There is no licence fee. As a licensed DGNB ESG manager, you must, however, fulfil annual mandatory training (CPD) to maintain your licence. You can earn DGNB CPD points by attending paid events.

Once you’ve signed the licence agreement, the CPD obligation begins in the calendar year following the year in which the examination to become a DGNB ESG Manager was passed. We offer you exclusive CPD options as a DGNB Certification expert, including convenient updates on the latest developments and new offers.

Other activities such as scientific publications, DGNB Certification projects or similar training events organised by recognised third parties are also recognised. 6 DGNB CPD points are the equivalent of approx. 6 x 45 minutes of learning.

Attending Seminar Day 1 is not compulsory, but the content we cover is part of the examination syllabus. You will of course still receive training documents afterwards so you can prepare for the DGNB ESG Manager exam.

To be authorised to audit New Construction and Renovation projects, further training is required to become either an International DGNB Consultant (for certification projects outside Germany) or a DGNB Consultant and then a DGNB Auditor (for certification projects within Germany).

In the past, International DGNB Consultants and DGNB International Auditors were allowed to certify new construction developments, renovation projects and buildings in use. As of 2025, we will offer two separate training courses. DGNB Auditors (outside Germany: International DGNB Consultants and International DGNB Auditors) will be certification experts for new construction and renovation projects. DGNB ESG Managers will be certification experts for buildings in use. Individuals may of course obtain both qualifications.

There will be a transition period until the end of 2025; until that point you can still register certification projects for the Buildings In Use system as an International DGNB Consultant or International DGNB Auditor and thus qualify as a DGNB ESG Manager.

We will shortly publish the expanded training content in our exclusive group for DGNB ESG Managers on the myDGNB platform. We will also be discussing learning content at the 2025 DGNB Expert Days.
