Basics of Sustainable Building

Learn what sustainability in building means and how to implement it

The cornerstone of any sustainable building project is knowing what is relevant and purposeful in its implementation. In this compact course, you will learn the essential basics of sustainable construction, whether for individual buildings or for an entire district. The course will give you a compact overview of the various interrelationships and their interdependencies. In addition, we will show you concrete ways to implement sustainability in the construction industry.

The course is held in German.

With the DGNB System and practical modules, which build on the Basics of Sustainable Building course, you will deepen what you have learned and acquire the necessary know-how to be able to implement DGNB requirements for buildings and districts in practice.

Event details

  • Students
  • Job starters and young professionals
  • Experienced professionals who would like to acquire initial knowledge about sustainable building
  • Generally interested people who would like to know more about the topic of sustainability in the context of construction

In the compact course Basics of Sustainable Building, you will learn what sustainability means and which important sustainability goals are defined at the political level. You will learn about the ecological footprint of the construction industry and its impact on socio-cultural issues such as health, comfort and social mix. As 'sustainable' also means planning for the long term and the whole life cycle, aspects such as reusability and recyclability also play a role.

We will show you the fields of action and concrete measures you can take to put sustainability into practice on an environmental, economic and socio-cultural level, and compare different options. We will also introduce you to the basic structure and objectives of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and the DGNB System.

Topic 1: Sustainability and environmental protection in planning and building

The construction industry has a significant impact on the pressing environmental crises of our time. We need to rethink entrenched patterns to mitigate climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion, and adapt our built environment to changing conditions.

  • Current (environmental) crises and the impact of the construction industry
  • Definitions of sustainability, sustainability models and policy objectives
  • Conservation of resources
  • Environmental protection and climate change adaptation

Topic 2: Holistic planning and building

Sustainability is about more than environmental protection. The environmental, economic and socio-cultural dimensions of sustainability all interact with each other.

  • Holistic planning and building
  • Integral Planning
  • Design and social aspects
  • Health and user satisfaction

Topic 3: Life cycle-oriented planning

Life cycle-oriented planning and building helps to promote sustainability in a holistic way. The impact of design measures over the life cycle can be made visible and comparable through different accounting methods.

  • Pollutants and risk substances in the life cycle of buildings
  • Long-term adaptability and usability
  • Introduction to life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • Introduction to  life cycle costing (LCC)
  • Insight into the DGNB Certification System

  • You will gain confirmed basic knowledge on the topic of sustainability in construction.
  •  You will understand what sustainability means and recognise the need for more sustainability in the construction industry.
  • You will gain an overview and understanding of relevant fields of action in sustainable planning and construction at building and district level.
  • You will understand the importance of holistic and life cycle-oriented planning to promote sustainability in the building sector.
  • You will gain an insight into the DGNB System.

You can choose from two different learning formats. We offer the Basics of Sustainable Building course as a live online event and as an on-demand course.

Following the compact course, you can take an optional 60-minute exam to confirm your basic knowledge of sustainability in construction. If you pass the exam, you will be awarded the title DGNB Registered Professional. This is also the first step towards becoming a DGNB Consultant. More information about the DGNB Registered Professional can be found here.

The examination consists of a total of 45 questions on the DGNB Compact Course Basics of Sustainable Building and is completed online. The questions are multiple choice. You must pass the exam with a score of at least 70 percent. If you do not achieve this on your first attempt, you can take a second attempt free of charge. The compact course and online exam are booked separately.
