The aim of this criterion is the economical use of natural resources and their efficient use. It promotes the reuse of materials to reduce the use of primary resources in construction.
Standards that fulfil the minimum requirements as well as the systemic requirements of criterion TEC1.6 for recycling-friendly building material selection and deconstruction-friendly construction can be recognised by the DGNB.
Selection of recyclable construction materials (indicator 1.1)
The selection of construction materials for components should be made with recycling in mind. A recycling-friendly selection of construction materials can be made by choosing solutions that are oriented towards the current recycling paths of the construction materials. Quality levels are assigned to these recycling routes in the criterion.
If a label fulfils the requirements of quality level 2, it can be recognised. For this purpose, the standard-setting organisation must prove that the award criteria exclude the use of environmentally harmful ingredients and that compliance with the criteria enables 100% recycling of the construction materials. The recyclability must not be restricted by compounds, coatings, adhesives or admixtures.
Deconstruction-friendly building design (Indicator 2.1)
If a building is to have a deconstruction-friendly design, this can be described by the ease of disassembly of the components and their separability into groups of materials that are as pure as possible by type. For the standard to be recognised, it must be demonstrated that the certified standard components can be removed from the building without being destroyed and that their layers can be separated from each other by type. The relevant component groups to be considered for this indicator can be taken from the criterion.
If a label fulfils the requirements of quality level 2, it can be recognised. For this purpose, the standard-setting organisation must prove that its label is only awarded for components for which the possibility of non-destructive removal of the components and separation of the component layers by type is given or separation by type is not necessary because the individual layers or individual elements belong to the same raw or material group.
Non-destructive removal of components within the meaning of this indicator means that the component can be reused or re-used without loss. The connections of the component with the structure or with adjacent components must be detachable without destroying remaining components or component layers. Separability of component layers of the same type within the meaning of the indicator means that the materials can be recycled without restriction.
